Why I Wrote My Books
Why I Wrote My Books
By Meriah Smith
I was always a dreamer for as long as I can remember. Daydreams were always my place to escape and my dreams were a big influence on my art and writing. I was also influenced by life and by every sci-fi (even nature documentaries) and fantasy movie, book, and TV show I ever watched. I was always an imaginative child with plenty of material to inspire me. I also always had a passion for a good story and making my own was an extension of that.
When I turned seventeen I tried writing about the world that lived inside my head for most o

Running
A desperate man fled through a desolate landscape east towards the safety of the weathered stones ahead. With any luck, he had lost his pursuers for good this time. The new day was already promising a blistering heat and he carried no water, no food and no gear to help him to survive for long. His dust colored robes and pants billowed back in the rising wind and he worried that a sandstorm might be approaching. It would a blessing if he found shelter in time.
Jonathan Taylor Smith, also sometimes known as Desert Rat, didn't know why King Richard's guards were still perusing him so determinedly across the Red Sands D

Refuge
Little Girl landed tiredly next to Johnny on the steep sandy grade a few yards from the cave's entrance. Goldie leapt off her withers and onto Johnny's back as he lay prone with his forehead pressed against his forearm, trying not to vomit as the cramp subsided.
"Get up!" Goldie squeaked urgently in his ear as Little Girl pushed him with tear-stained muzzle, soaking the cloth of his robes as she started to cry again. "They're too far away to see us, but I can still hear their noisy engines coming and it won't be long before that storm hits us."
Johnny shifted and Goldie jumped off his back. He tried to breathe

Memories
Jonathan Taylor Smith began his first twelve years of life in a small city. His parents were neither rich nor struggling to make ends meet. He had a baby sister just under a year old named Mary who he loved and adored who had been born a few months after his twelfth birthday. He did everything he could to help his mother and father to look after her.
His mother's name was Zora, had the magic talents of a seer and empath. She used her ability as a seer to tell her customers' fortunes and called upon her more powerful empathic abilities, or to know when someone was lying, or to assist in diagnosing ailments because sh

Memories Continued
Ling and her husband Isaac adopted Jonathan as one of their own. They already had a biological daughter just a year younger than Johnathan named Aiko and a son two years older named Noah.
Once a captured slave herself, Ling had traveled far from her home in China, having been traded off or sold to different masters throughout her life, beginning at the age of ten. Eventually she found herself belonging to a master in the Middle East where the Dragon Clan discovered and raided her band. Her master had been a cruel man, so when they killed him, she did not shed a tear. The clan confiscated the goods meant fo

Cargo
Johnny woke with a start. He wasn't in the cave anymore and both Little Girl and Goldie were gone. The dark stone walls had been replaced by blue-green canvas, which flapped gently in the breeze as the afternoon sun filtered through the rich fabric.
He shifted, suddenly feeling the comfortable cot beneath him, the light blankets covering him, the nice pillow…and he was stark naked; even his hair was undone.
He stretched and inhaled deeply, catching the smell of food nearby. When he sat up and scratched his jaw, he discovered his face had been shaved while he slept. His hair and skin smelled of lavender soap

Mary
Johnny listened as Ling began to sing a chant in her own native Mandarin language. When she spoke the language of the Dragon Clan, she had an accent that took a while to get used to. Still, no one had any trouble understanding her.
She called out the princess's name and her image appeared in the mirror.
"Who summons me?" Elena demanded, looking startled. Dark circles hung beneath her sunken eyes, her skin a bit paler than normal and her lovely dress had a couple of small unidentifiable stains on it. She had not fared well since his last meeting with her.
"Lady Chief Ling of the Dragon Clan," Ling answered form

Return of the Dune Lady
As soon as Elena signed off, Johnny made the mirror disappear. He placed his fists to both sides of his head and fell to his knees. He rocked back and forth a few times then threw back his head and howled. Leaning forward, he beat the rugs with his fists in his anger, fear and frustration. It was the closest he had come to pitching a fit since he’d been a child. He couldn’t help it.
He had finally found his sister and what had she done? She had put her baby in him! He had to remind himself he would do anything to keep his family safe, but this was extreme—even for him.
